We travelled here by catching the train from negombo to Puttalam - think again - the buses were crammed, not on the tourist trail at all - we had to bribe a taxi driver to get us past all the checkpoints to Anuradhpura. Tamils issues on the border in 2005 still. The hotel was a relief just because we got there - but a lovely old building and walkable into the town. Nice bat on the roof with cold beer. We found a great tulk-tuk driver to take us ound ll the ancient sites - he was fantastic - but watch out for the guides who are grasping! He also got us onto the Dabulla bus when we left so we got to see temple monkeys and an enormous buddha on the route back to kandy.
PS I left a nice pair of sandals under the bed - hope they were useful to whoever found them. |
